Shirley Sylvia Cornell

Shirley Sylvia Cornell, 85, of Newport passed away December 19, 2018 at Atrium Health in Charlotte.  She was born on July 12, 1933 in Allentown, PA to the late William Kenneth Shannon, Sr. and Beatrice Frye Sandt.  She is also preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta Lee Cornell Hutchinson; brother, William K. Shannon, Jr.; and granddaughter, Cheralee Beverly  Shirley was a member of and attended Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Atlantic Beach, NC.  In her spare time, she enjoyed needlepoint, cross stitch, embroidery, crosswords, word searches, and playing Bingo.  She also enjoyed a good cup of mint tea.  She dearly loved her dog companion, Baby Doll.

Shirley is survived by her daughters, Victoria Alda Price and husband William of Autryville, NC and Cheryl Ann Cornell Rakes and husband Richard Dale of Gastonia; brother, Gregory Sandt of PA; 15 grandchildren, John Ervin, Jr., Amanda Bloomer, Shanna Marsh, Donna Hutchinson, Joshua Gosnell, William Price IV, Jennifer Price, Robert Price, Katherine McKenzie, Shirley Lane, Michael Price, Richard Workman, Margeorie Prichett, Mattie Cooke, and Sam Griffin; 37 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; lifetime friend, Ruth Fetterman; and close friends, Candy King and Cliff Dotseth.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Shirley will be held Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Benson Funeral & Cremation Services, Mt. Holly with Rev. Robert Oliver officiating.
