Mt. Holly

Richard "Rick" F. Joy, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024, at Atrium Health Charlotte. He was born on June 2, 1954, in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, and spent his life creating lasting memories with his loved ones.

Rick dedicated many years of his career to Santee Cooper Power Company in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his colleagues and the satisfaction of his work. An honorable veteran, he proudly served in the Army National Guard, embodying the values of service, commitment, and integrity.

As a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Rick found solace in his faith and community, consistently giving his time and love to those around him. His fondness for the outdoors shone through in his hobbies; he was an avid golfer who relished every opportunity to play a round, and he enjoyed fishing, always eager to share his stories from the water. Family gatherings often revolved around grilling, where he would showcase his culinary skills and create an inviting atmosphere for all.

Rick's greatest treasure was his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 36 years, Terry Dowdle Joy, who was his steadfast partner and confidante through all of life's adventures. He was a proud father to his daughter, Kelly Joy Yonak (Reggie), and sons, Michael and Allen Summerville, each of whom carries on his legacy of kindness and love. He cherished his role as a grandfather to Justin, Emma, Hannah, Blake, Hattie, and Jacob, and his great-grandchildren: Emmerson, Jackson, Clayton, and Novaleigh, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.

Rick is survived by his sisters, Jody Hartsell (Eddie) and Martha Casper (Mike), and brothers Rusty and John Joy, who will remember him fondly as a beloved sibling and a source of strength. His mother-in-law, Loretta Dowdle and also sister-in-law, Donna Dowdle. He held a special bond with his niece, Courtney Nesline (Kevin), as well as several other nieces and nephews who appreciated his guidance and affection.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Lillian Cust Joy, who instilled in him the values that shaped the wonderful man he became. Rick's absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His spirit will live on in each cherished memory and in the love he so generously shared throughout his life.
