Maggie Sue McLendon, 81, a beloved school cafeteria assistant, passed away peacefully at Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia on November 19, 2023. She was born on December 16, 1941, in Caldwell County, NC, to the late Jonah G. and Lucindy Herald Penley.
Maggie had a heart full of love and a zest for life that touched the lives of everyone she encountered. She dedicated herself to her community as a youth teacher and was an active member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. Her commitment to nurturing young minds will always be remembered fondly by those who had the pleasure of learning from her.
Outside of her career and church activities, Maggie found great joy in exploring nature. She loved taking trips to the cabin in Brown Mountain and the Lenoir area. The enchanting beauty of these places brought her peace and tranquility. Additionally, she adored visiting the beach with Myrtle Beach being one of her favorite destinations. The rhythmic sound of crashing waves and warm sandy shores allowed her to find solace and create cherished memories with her loved ones.
In her free time, Maggie enjoyed tending to her garden, caring for her flowers, and doing yard work. The vibrant colors of her blossoming plants were a reflection of the joy she brought into the world. Her dedication to nurturing life extended beyond humans as she tended to each plant with love and tenderness.
Maggie's warmth extended far beyond nature; it encompassed her family as well. She was known for being a dedicated mother to her children, Benny McLendon and Rhonda Pentecost and her husband Will. Her love radiated through four generations as she cherished not only her grandchildren Casey, Mackenzi, Nathan, and Chrissy but also her great-grandchildren, Collin, Logan, Lucas, Landyn, Jesse, and Jaxson.
During this time of grief, we remember those who have preceded Maggie in death. She is now reunited with her husband, Arthur Eugene McLendon and her beloved son, Darren McLendon, who left this world too soon. In addition, she was preceded by her sister, Mildred Bowman and her brothers, Elmore Penley and Albert "Buz" Penley. Their memory will always be cherished and their legacy will live on in our hearts.
Maggie also leaves behind a loving brother, Claude Penley, who will continue to carry on the family's bond of love and support.
In conclusion, Maggie Sue McLendon was an extraordinary woman who touched the lives of many with her kindness, love, and unwavering spirit. Her nurturing nature extended beyond the cafeteria walls as she nurtured the minds of children, the beauty of nature, and the bond of family. As we gather to celebrate her life, let us remember her fondly and keep her vibrant spirit alive in our hearts.
