Karen P. Helms, born on August 5, 1949, in Watauga County, North Carolina, to the late C.A. and Frances Berry Payne, passed away peacefully at her residence on December 9, 2024. She embraced life with unwavering passion, which was evident in her love for animals and her love for the world of horses. Throughout her life, Karen showed paint horses, demonstrating not only her skill but also her profound admiration for these magnificent creatures. Her gentle spirit extended beyond horses as she cared for all animals with a nurturing heart.
In addition to her equestrian pursuits, Karen was a devoted LEGO hobbyist. She delighted in collecting LEGO sets and found joy in building intricate creations, reflecting her creativity and imagination.
Karen is lovingly remembered by her husband, CB Helms, with whom she shared 57 wonderful years of marriage. She is also survived by her daughter, Wendy Helms Bekesi and her husband Richard; her son, Destry Clinton Helms and his wife Denise; and her adoring seven grandchildren: Marshall, Blake, Devon, Jordan, Collin, Ian, and Julian.
She is preceded in death by her parents, C.A. and Mamie Berry Payne, and her sisters, Marsha C. Payne and Sandra Gentile. The legacy of Karen's love for family, animals, and her passions will endure in the hearts of those she leaves behind. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered for the joy she brought into the lives of many.
