Jimmy Ray Abernathy, 85, passed away January 15, 2019 at Stanley Total Living Center.
Mr. Abernathy was born March 13, 1933 to the late Luther and Nancy Abernathy. He is also preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Hovis Abernathy and his son Michael Hovis Abernathy. Jimmy was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Stanley since 1945 where he held the position of Deacon and Elder. He also served in the US
Army from 1953-1955 where he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He retired after 30 years of service at Duke Power and then owned and operated Abernathy Hardware in Stanley. He also served on the board of the Stanley Total Living Center during its early years.
Survivors include his son, Brian Ray Abernathy and wife Anne Caldwell Abernathy of Stanley; Grandsons, Josh Abernathy and wife Rebecca, and Seth Abernathy and wife Chelsea; and three great-grandchildren, Adler, Sawyer and Evie.
Services to Celebrate Jimmy's life will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday Jan. 17 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dan King officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Graveside will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorials in Mr. Abernathy's name be made to First Presbyterian Church. 512 Old Mt. Holly Rd., Stanley, NC 28164.
