Jack Reid Mathison, Jr.

April 10, 1957 — March 15, 2025

Belmont, NC

Jack Reid Mathison, Jr. of Sneads Ferry, NC, formerly of Belmont, NC was born in Gaston County on April 10, 1957, to the late Jack Reid Mathison, Sr. (affectionately known as Big Jack) and Audrey D. Mathison (known as Momma). He left this world on March 15, 2025, at The Service League of Greenville Hospice House in Greenville, NC, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

Jack was a loving father, son, brother, cousin, and friend. His spirit will continue to shine through the lives of those he leaves behind. He is survived by his devoted son, Bryan J. Mathison of Louisville, Mississippi, and his caring daughter, Heather N. McCloskey and her boyfriend Ronnie of Sneads Ferry, NC. Jack was a proud grandfather to seven beautiful grandchildren: Chelsea, David, Joseph, Kristopher, Madelynn, Michael, and Kaden. Each one of them held a special place in his heart and will carry his memory forward.

Jack's warm presence will also be deeply missed by his “buddies,” who were like brothers to him. He shared countless adventures with Eric and Alisha Hogsed of Warne, NC, and Stanley Pierce of Sneads Ferry. He also shared a special bond with his daughter's best friend and called her his “bonus daughter,” Tisha Allen of Shelby, NC,  along with her two children that he considered as grandchildren, Michael and Kaden.

In addition to his immediate family, Jack’s journey was shaped by the values instilled in him by his parents and the love he fostered in his relationships. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Robert S. Mathison, who remains in the hearts of those who loved him.

Jack had many passions, but none shone brighter than his love for the ocean and the activities associated with it. He enjoyed being on the water shrimping, clamming, and embarking on offshore grouper fishing adventures with his close friend, Stanley P. Jack found pure happiness during sunset cruises on the water, where he embraced the tranquility and beauty of nature.

For much of his life, Jack was known affectionately as "An Old Man Truck Driver," taking great pride in his work and crafting a reputation as a man dedicated to his job. His love for racing was evident as he watched every kind of race on television with enthusiasm and support for UNC basketball—a true fan at heart.

Jack's graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at the New Bethel Independent Missionary Baptist Church, 4108 Mountain View St, Gastonia, NC 28056 beginning at 2:00 PM.
