Donald E. Sloop, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on July 24, 1937, in Iredell County, North Carolina, Donald lived a life marked by dedication to his family and country.

A skilled HVAC Sheet Metal Mechanic, Don dedicated 35+ years to his career, providing for his family with pride and commitment.  In his early retirement, he embraced a new hobby as a videographer, capturing moments for his family that they will cherish for years to come.

Don proudly served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960. His love for his country was evident, and his service was a point of pride throughout his life.

An avid sports fan, Don enjoyed fishing and golfing during his younger years. He loved watching sports on television, especially golf. When Don was not watching sports the TV was on Fox News. His favorite food was seafood, and he loved Laura's homemade banana pudding.

Don is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Ruby E. Sloop; his son, Donald A. Sloop, and wife Laura; his daughter, Bobbie S. Hatcher, and husband Frank; as well as grandchildren April Sloop, Tricia McQueen and husband Chris, Brooke Hatcher (Kaiser) and Kyle Hatcher (Campbell). He also leaves behind great-grandchildren, Jesse Bellflower (Delaney), James McQueen (Jaleigh) and Sadie McQueen, all of whom will carry forward his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Ethel Sloop; his brothers, Bill and Charles Sloop; and his sister, Betty Austin.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Benson Funeral & Cremation in Mt. Holly, at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 1:00 pm. Service officiated by Rev. Frank Hatcher and grandson Kyle Hatcher. Internment will follow with full military honors at Evergreen Cemetery "A Quiet Place" in Belmont.
