Monroe, NC

Darrell "Lightning" Lentz Scarboro, a beloved, father, grandfather, and friend, was born on July 7, 1939, in Stanly County, NC to the late Eli Pete Scarboro and Hazel Griffin Scarboro. Surrounded by his loving family,  Darrell entered the gates of Heaven on March 2, 2025 at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories and a profound impact on all who knew him.

Darrell's journey through life was marked by hard work and a dedication to his family. He began his career at the A&P meat plant in Charlotte, NC, where he met his soulmate, Margaret Lucille "Sil" Crosby Scarboro. Together for 62 years, they embarked on a journey of entrepreneurship, skillfully operating a car detailing and cleaning business that brought sparkle to cars, churches, and offices alike. Darrell’s work ethic earned him a reputation for speed and efficiency, garnering him the affectionate nickname "Lightning" during his time at Hendrick Motorsports, where he cleaned the shop and contributed to the fast-paced world of racing with his fast-paced cleaning skills. He also lent his talents to local car dealerships in Charlotte, leaving an indelible detailing mark of quality and care.

Outside of work, Darrell embraced a life filled with love for his family and passions that brought him joy. He had an unwavering bond with his little dog, Kippy, who was his constant companion, following him wherever he roamed. Darrell was a loving and caring father, taking immense pride in his daughter, Debbie Hancock, and her husband Mike. He relished the bright moments spent with his granddaughter, Tamara Collins, and her husband Ryan, and reveled in the joy of his great-grandson, Nathan Arant. The light in his eyes was undeniable whenever he spoke of them.

Darrell’s interests reflected his vibrant spirit. He delighted in fishing, often spending peaceful afternoons by the water. The artistic side of him shone through in the folk art creations he crafted alongside his wife, a testament to their enduring partnership. He was drawn to the sun-kissed shores of the beach, finding solace and happiness in the gentle waves and ocean breezes. Music was another passion, one that resonated deeply within him; whether playing his guitar or harmonica, he found joy in sharing melodies that made hearts sing. His love for NASCAR was a thrilling aspect of his personality, bringing excitement and camaraderie with fellow fans.

In addition to his parents, Darrell was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lucille "Sil" Crosby Scarboro and his brother, Larry Scarboro.

As he enters the gates of Heaven, reunited with his cherished wife, his memory will forever echo in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Darrell "Lightening" Lentz Scarboro may have departed from this world, but he will continue to shine brightly in the stories shared by those who loved him.
