Charlotte Lowe Whitesides, 87, of Gastonia passed away April 11, 2017 at the White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. Ms. Whitesides was born September 22, 1929 in Mecklenburg County to the late Fred Lowe Sr. and Mary Wilkinson Lowe. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Joseph “Roy” Whitesides, brother Fred Lowe Jr. and sister Gwen Morrow. Charlotte was known for being the Aquatic Director at the Gaston YMCA for 45 years. She had taught many Gaston County residents to swim and was blessed to have taught an Olympic Gold Medal winner and also founded the Gaston Gators Swim team. She loved to fish, the beach and enjoyed helping with the Special Olympics. Survivors include her children, Kathie Anthony and Debbie Curry and husband Alan, all of Gastonia; Grandchildren, Leslie, Wes, and Ashley (Kenny Hayes); and great grandchild Tripp Hayes. Memorial Services to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 PM Friday April 14 at West Avenue Presbyterian Church in Gastonia where she was a longtime member. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family request donations made in Charlotte’s Memory to the West Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1015 W. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, NC 28052 or to Special Olympics Gaston County, 1600 Burning Willow Court, Gastonia, NC 28054.
